As of January 7, 2026, refugee families in Lincoln and Omaha have reported that their January SNAP food benefits were stolen or missing. The theft is happening through card-skimming devices targeting local ethnic grocery stores. Law enforcement and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services have reported 130 cases, and have confirmed card-skimming devices have been placed in Lincoln and Omaha. DHHS news release: https://dhhs.ne.gov/Pages/DHHS-Investigates-EBT-Fraud-and-Removes-Several-Skimming-Devices.aspx. Families are being encouraged to seek out food support from food pantries.
This is the most important step you can take to protect your funds. DHHS confirmed you do not need to cancel your card, even if your number was stolen. Change your PIN as soon as possible. Visit Restoring Dignity’s website for up to date information and simple step-by-step instructions: CLICK HERE.
