SNAP EBT Fraud Information

Important Warning: SNAP EBT Card Fraud in Omaha

Updated: January 7, 2026

As of January 7, 2026, refugee families in Lincoln and Omaha have reported that their January SNAP food benefits were stolen or missing. The theft is happening through card-skimming devices targeting local ethnic grocery stores. Law enforcement and the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services have reported 130 cases, and have confirmed card-skimming devices have been placed in Lincoln and Omaha. DHHS news release: https://dhhs.ne.gov/Pages/DHHS-Investigates-EBT-Fraud-and-Removes-Several-Skimming-Devices.aspx. Families are being encouraged to seek out food support from food pantries.

What You Should Do Right Now

Change Your EBT Card PIN Immediately.  

This is the most important step you can take to protect your funds. DHHS confirmed you do not need to cancel your card, even if your number was stolen. Change your PIN as soon as possible. The Omaha Refugee Task Force (ORTF) is a collaborative effort of refugee community leaders, resettlement agencies, city officials, and other service providers whose purpose is to advocate for and address refugee issues in Omaha.
